education saves lives - it's simple

Soroti

In this area, north east of Kampala, we are working with the Church of Uganda Education Department and a local cultural group, both of whom we were put in touch with by one of our Associates, Dr Jeanette Meadway. Both groups have been very proactive in helping us with translations into the local language (Ateso), sourcing people to record the translated scripts, and helping us obtain local photos to illustrate future lessons. We now have 13 portable players in this area, being used in outlying villages, schools and health centres.

In one of the schools in Soroti town children have formed various clubs and societies, including HIV/AIDS awareness groups. The portable player held at this school can be borrowed by the members of these groups for peer to peer educational sessions - and, if one of the DVD viewings Bev witnessed on a recent trip to Soroti is anything to go by, these sessions are proving very popular; many children clustered around the screen, all excitedly discussing the answers to the questions in the lesson (and a huge cheer at the end when they managed to get all 10 questions in the quiz correct!).
