education saves lives - it's simple

The Salesian Sisters of Don Bosco

The Don Bosco nuns, who we started working with in March 2007, run a vocational training centre for girls (and a separate one for boys) in Phnom Penh. Here the nuns teach girls from surrounding villages - academically gifted girls from poor families who wouldn't normally have the chance of a decent education. Part of the girls' education is going back out into the local community to work with the poorest of the poor, which is where they will use the TME equipment, which at present consists of just one portable DVD player and a set of lessons. As well as an outreach programme in 5 villages around Phnom Penh, the nuns and their students also go out once a week to a huge dump, about an hour outside the city, where many families are trying to eke out a very meagre existence. They've been trying to educate the families about basic hygiene issues and so were very excited to see we have a lesson on this subject in Khmer!
